The history of this holiday dates back to the distant past.
Mother's Day in Ukraine was organized by the Union of Ukrainian Women in Canada for the first time. It happened back in 1928. And the following year, Lviv took the initiative. The initiator of the holiday in 1929 was Olena Kyselivska.
In the first half of the XX century, honouring mothers was initiated and supported by leading women's and public educational organizations. "Plast", "Sokil", "Ridna shkola", "Prosvita" on this day held concerts, festivals and conferences throughout Western Galicia.
In 1939, the Soviet authorities banned this holiday; and in May 1999, following the Decree of the President of Ukraine - "On Mother's Day" is celebrated every year on the second Sunday in May.
