  • Churches and Cathedrals

Church of the Transfiguration appeared on the site of the Church of the Holy Trinity of Fathers of the Trinitarians order.

In the end of the XVIII century the Emperor Joseph II opened a university in a former monastery building.

In 1848 during the revolutionary events buildings of university were destroyed by fire and artillery shots. Subsequently, Emperor Franz Joseph I gave them to his "faithful Rusyns".

Сonstruction of the second (after the Assumption) Greek Catholic Church in Lviv began on the basis of the preserved walls.

Construction lasted for twenty years (1878-1898). The project of the temple was designed in historicist style by Sylvester Havryshkevych.

The decoration of the temple were created thanks to the talent of the masters Leonardo Marconi, who created 12 sculptures of the apostles and decorative ornaments, and Tadei Popel, who designed images for the iconostasis.

On April 1906 the church was consecrated by Metropolitan Andrey Sheptytskyi. After years of repression and being in the underground, the Transfiguration Church was the first in Lviv to return to the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church in October1989.
