For many people, travel has become an integral part of life. They give us a good mood, new impressions, emotions, and acquaintances; they help to broaden our horizons and create unforgettable memories.
However, we often forget about the impact of our travels on local people and the environment. Environmental pollution, depletion of natural resources, and loss of cultural identity of communities are the other side of tourism.
To minimise the negative impacts of the tourism industry on local communities and the environment, to avoid overconsumption and to improve social and economic impact, we need to develop sustainable tourism.
First of all, what is sustainable development?
It is a long-term activity that does not cause irreparable damage to the environment and future generations. In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, which highlight the main areas of development for countries. When we discuss sustainable development, we mean changes for the environment and people. It is a complex matter and requires constant improvement.
What is sustainable tourism?
The World Tourism Organisation defines sustainable tourism as:
"Takes full account of its current and future economic, social and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment and host communities".
The whole idea of sustainable tourism involves a balance of three components to ensure that sustainable development goals have a positive impact on residents, tourists and industry representatives.
Why is sustainable tourism important?
Sustainable tourism has long been a global trend. We need to learn and implement sustainable practices for the industry to develop qualitatively. In the Ukrainian context, today is an essential time to develop new solutions to be ready for the rapid recovery of tourist flows and quality services.
What are the benefits of sustainable tourism?
In general, we should consider sustainable tourism not only as responsible travel or environmental protection but also as a comprehensive destination development model.
Examples of sustainable tourism
1. Development of urban recreation culture.
Creation of urban spaces for recreation that are comfortable for visitors and residents. Increasing and promoting green areas, the use of electric transport, and events aimed at preserving the destination's cultural heritage and the identity of its residents.
2. Promotion of ecotourism.
Visits to national parks, birdwatching, hiking, extreme sports, etc.
3. Promotion of local products and gastronomy.
Gastronomy remains an integral part of the tourism product. Tourists are increasingly paying attention to traditional local cuisine and products.
4. Reducing the use of plastic.
Tourists can use reusable water bottles. For this purpose, there is a common practice of installing drinking fountains in cities. In Lviv, for example, there are already nine of them. In turn, hotels and restaurants also prefer reusable tableware.
5. Rational use of resources.
Hotels and restaurants implement energy-saving measures, rational use of water resources and ensure the collection and sorting of household waste.
Sustainable tourism is the key to ensuring the quality and sustainable development of the tourism industry. It is the path to a balanced and responsible tourism recovery. That is why studying sustainable tourism is a priority for us right now. We are open to cooperation and encourage you to work together in this direction.
