The last earthly days of Jesus Christ will be shown in the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion. During the Easter Lent, the exhibition "Simon Chekhovych" will be opened in the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion
The collection consists of 11 icons made on canvas and 12 works of painting painted with oil paints on copper plates. The works were created in the Pidgoretsk Castle in the Lviv Region. During the years 1762–1767, Simon Chekhovych worked here at the invitation of the owner of the castle, Crown Hetman of Poland Vaclav Zhewuski.
In 2020, the collection was presented at a retrospective international exhibition of the artist's work in Krakow at the National Museum under the title "Baroque Genius. Simon Chekhovych (1689 - 1775)".
Today, the entire collection of Simon Chekhovych's works from the collection of the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion will be exhibited for the first time in the museum's exhibition hall. And this is 23 jobs. Conservation and restoration measures were carried out by the head of the restoration, the head of the scientific and restoration department of the museum, Maria Bonkovska, and the artist-restorer of the painting department, Myroslava Yakymovych.
Among the canvases presented are "St. Anna with Mary", "The Virgin and Child", "The Vision of St. Anthony of Padua", "St. Benedict", others. Almost every work is dated and signed by the author himself. Based on several icons, the organizers will show the entire restoration process with the help of photos.
A special place belongs to the "Way of the Cross" in Simon Chekhovych's religious painting. Eleven of the fourteen stations are preserved in the Lviv Museum of the History of Religion (three in Poland). The average size of the plates is 58x41 cm. As indicated in the inventory book of the Pidgoretsk Castle in 1768, all the stations were hung in the green hall, and since 1939, the "Passion" cycle was moved to the chapel. The works impress with their power and depth of image.
