The wooden church of the Holy Trinity in Volia-Homuletska

It was built in 1756 when Hamulets was an independent settlement at the crossroads of roads leading from neighbouring villages to Lviv.

The church is unique because it is one of the rare bipartite churches (which consists of two parts). Since there were not many parishioners, the church was small. Today, there are only a few such buildings: in Belz, Besidy and Volia-Homuletska.

To better tell about the old wooden church, we visited Volіa-Homuletska and talked with the architect-restorer Ms Halyna Kruk and the current priest-rector.

The church consists of a nave and a faceted altar from the east, made of a log. All roofs, baths and walls were covered with shingles*. Choirs were at the western wall of the nave.

The monument was under construction.

* Shingles are an integral part of the national Hutsul construction technique, used as a natural roofing material. It is made by hand from spruce.

It is known that there was a wooden bell tower in the yard. Today, the wooden fences and bell towers are lost. In the second half of the 20th century, many elements were lost, including the shingle identification.

In the church interior, you can see a partially lost icon painting on the walls. The altar depicts two figures of apostles, evangelists, and God the Father (on the vaulted bath from the east). The decorative design of the walls has significant losses.

Today, the unique church is awaiting restoration and is under threat of significant destruction. However, we recommend visiting it on Sunday or any other day and discovering another special place near Lviv.

To get to the location by public transport, we recommend using route No. 22 (from Zernova St. to Pid Osovoiu St.)

To go inside the church on weekdays/Saturdays, call the parish priest Lіubomyr at +380679667956

Special thanks to Ms Halyna Kruk for the provided information
